Lions HC Dan Campbell 'kind of had an idea' Zach Wilson would be starting for Jets

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Friday that he wasn't surprised with the news that his team would be facing Zach Wilson during their Week 15 game against the New York Jets.

For most of the week, it looked like Mike White would be under center again for head coach Robert Saleh on Sunday, but the 27-year-old couldn't get cleared by doctor's due to his rib injury. In his three starts from Weeks 12 through 14, White compiled a 62.0% completion percentage with 952 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, but the Jets went just 1-2.

New York defeated the Chicago Bears in White's first start of the year and has lost to the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills on the road to begin December.

Wilson missed the first three weeks of the season with a meniscus tear but suited up from Weeks 4 through 11, a stretch in which the team won four straight and went 5-2 overall. The 23-year-old's numbers haven't pretty though, as he's posted a 55.6% completion percentage with 1,279 passing yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions in the seven contests.

That's when Saleh had -- as one analyst called it -- his "George Costanza moment" and switched to White. Less than one month later, Wilson is back.

"We kind of had an idea, so we're ready," Campbell said of the possibility of Wilson starting on Sunday. "We knew he was going into the game anyway (as the No. 2 QB), so we figured they were going to play him. So, it’s really -- same thing, man, it’s about being disciplined."

While the Jets (7-6) still have a better record than the Lions (6-7), Detroit has significantly more momentum entering Sunday, and both are just outside of the playoff picture as the ninth seed in their respective conferences. New York will host the 1 p.m. ET contest having lost four out of their last six, while Detroit has won five of their last six.
