Bubba Wallace reflects on back to back top-5 finishes: ‘My brain is mush’

Bubba Wallace has started the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series campaign on a tear, capturing back-to-back top five finishes thus far.

While it hasn’t been easy, as Wallace has been caught up in a myriad of wrecks during the races at Daytona and Atlanta, the 23XI Racing wheelman has come home P5 both weeks, the only driver to do so in the Cup Series. With Las Vegas looming next weekend, he’ll be hoping to continue his streak moving forward.

Still, back-to-back top five finishes at the unpredictable tracks of Daytona and Atlanta is nothing to scoff at. Afterwards, Wallace took to social media to explain the psychological toll the racing is taking on him, and why he’s so proud of his team for what they’ve been able to accomplish so far on the season.

“May sound like a joke but my brain is mush. The psychological piece to plate racing is massive,” Wallace posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Yes it’s big any other race but receiving and digesting the info from @FreddieKraft lap by lap, corner by corner to make sure you’re in the right spot is intense. You have to be ON from start to finish. Restarts at 1.5 miles is a lot like this..but that’s 2-3 laps. Not 460. Proud of this 23 team. I set us back today but nothing we haven’t overcome before. There is something special with this group this year!

“Time to really lock in and get the stars aligned. Back to back top5s is great start… but there is 24 more left. Y’all enjoy it for me. Bourbon me.”

After spending last season just trying to get into the playoffs week-in and week-out, Wallace is going to get a win if he keeps running up front, like he’s done so far in 2024. Of course, we all know of his super-speedway prowess, but his overall driving ability has improved, as well.

Additionally, Wallace is in a pivotal season with 23XI Racing, after Tyler Reddick outperformed him in 2023, the driver of the No. 45 Toyota’s first season with the team. There’s some friendly competition between the two, and Wallace is hoping to get back on track in 2024.

So far, so good for the No. 23 wheelman. Las Vegas is up next, and then Phoenix the next weekend. We’ll see if Bubba Wallace can continue his streak of top-five finishes, and if he can turn one of them into a win over the next couple of weeks.
